Lord Muruga speaks via Jeevanadi

Lord Muruga's new announcement via Jeevanadi. A bright VastGraceLight star to be appeared on the May 1st night to create awareness among the common people of upcoming Gnana Yuga.
You (the soul /athma /tiny particle of vast grace light) came from the supreme source (God / Vast Grace Light). No one has created the supreme source, neither no one has created you, the soul, which has always been the part of the supreme source . No one can detroy the God or you(soul). Because you were part of the supreme source and you have always been the part of it which you do not realise it now. You wanted to experience the birth and death cycle(karmic/deeds cycle). Now you are caught up in the great maya(illusion). You believe that you're separate from all other souls and the supreme soul(Paramathma/ God). But you have always been part of supreme source and all the living beings(souls) around you.In that sense, you are, indeed, the supreme creator. That supreme creator which is the immortal Self of all, which is the beginningless and endless entity, which is immutable and infinite, which is beyond the reach of mind, word, explanation and speech. Meditate on this. Realise this and strive to be free.

My dears! you are, indeed, God. You are the supreme source. You are the most blessed Supreme Being! Realise this and strive to be free. Come to Ongarakudil where I, Murugan, and my disciples, Siddhas riside in our light bodies. My disciples Siddhas, who are perfected Masters and they embody my true being, are ready to guide you to reach back to the Home(Heaven or any names you want to call) which is always rightly belongs to all of you. Again I call upon all my dearest devotees, I and Siddhas are ready to guide you to free from the great maya(Illusion). Your Home(Heaven) awaits you. Meditate on this. Realise this and strive to be free. Become oneness with the supreme source.

And of course, assistance will be given to you.
Come to ஓங்காரக்குடில் Ongarakudill
Thank you my children, thank you.

I, Murugan, Bless you.
Subham.

The Shambala King, Pleiadian Head Master

The Son of God: Subramanya, Skanda, Kārttikeya, Sanatkumāra - The Shambala King, Pleiadian Head Master

Karttikeya aka Sanatkumāra (Sanatkumara) is God's Son, the Son of Śiva and Śakti, God and Goddess, and He represents the highest state to which a spiritual aspirant can evolve. He is said to have been born of Śiva from Pārvatî Śakti to destroy the evil demon Tārakāsura. Before conceiving Him, even these heavenly Parents of the World had to perform severe Tapas or austerities! This teaches the world of the great need for Tapas on the part of parents desirous of excellence of offspring. He is stated to have been born in a forest of arrow-like grass (hence the name Śaravaṇabhava) and reared by the six divine mothers of the constellation known as Kṛttikā, Pleiades. Hence the names Kārttikeya and Ṣaṇmātura in meaning, that Sanatkumāra is from Pleiades and have Six Mothers. Kumāra or Sanatkumāra means someone being very young and virile, and this noble God's Son i really always like strong, vital and young boy.

If much more and better known the God's Son Gaṇapati or Gaṇeśa is universally reverd by almost all the Hindus, Buddhists and Jains, and has even succeeded in going abroad to many countries of South East Asia, China, Japan and Afghanistan, Sanatkumāra his brother in Heaven has somehow remained confided to South India and older Śaivita traditions. Historically speaking, Sanatkumāra or Subrahmaṇya is a much older deity, being mentioned in stone inscriptions and shown on coins (from 1st century to 5th century A.D.) and was well-known in North India, Pamir and Himalaya Region. The sixth day (Ṣaṣthî, Shashthi) of a lunar month, the sixth Tithi is considered sacred to Him similar like with serpent deities. This number six is as magical number a part of esoteric tradition belonging to oldest but always young Kumāra well known as Subrahmaṇya - one who leads towards Brahman, the Highest God.

Etymologically the word Subrahmaṇya means one who tends the spiritual growth of the aspirants, one who leads toward the Lord God. It is only He, who has reached the summit of spiritual perfection in this life, this is capable of tending the spiritual growth of others. Mythology and religion describes Sanatkumāra as the Son of God, Śiva, begotten to save the world from tyranny of the fiend Tāraka-Asura, the ebodied devil. This is more true in the spiritual sense, because the way to heaven is constant battle against evil. Subrahmaṇya or Sanatkumāra called Saṇmukha (Shaṇmukha) is depicted with six heads and twelve hands, all of them being attached to one trunk resting on two feet. His six heads represent the five sense organs and the mind, which controls and co-ordinates their activities. When these are controlled, refined and sublimated, human being as so as deva (angel, god) becomes a superhuman being or super heavenly being and may overcome all devil forces!

In spiritual icons, Sanatkumāra is shown as a warrior-boy either with one head and two arms or with six heads and twelve arms. This first form of Murti is for beginners in meditations and visualizations, very easy to keep in mind. Sanatkumāra known as Skanda is the spiritual, great warrior! He is said to have been married to a forest maid Vaḷḷi-Amma during His service as heavenly Avatāra of God's Son. His temples or Āśramas are usually found on hill-tops. The peacock is His carrier, Vasana. In His icons, His lance and His peacoc are also prominently displayed and a fowladorns His banner! As the warrior angel or god He was appointed through the Highest One as the Commander-in-chief of the gods (angels)of the Heaven and thus became Devasenāpati. Hence He is the Lord of Heavenly Warriors, Guardian Angels and godly angels who are the Keepers of the Heaven!

Pleiadian Master, the Lord God's Son, Sanatkumāra with His matchless weapon, the Śakti or lanc, shining brilantly like fire, He easily destroyed the devil Tārakāsura, thus becoming Śaktidhara and Tārakāri. As a forcefull attacker in war against devil beings, He is known as Skanda, but the name Skanda also means one who has accumulated the power of chastity. The God's Son Skanda Kumara likes holy people (Brāhmaṇas) and is always good to them. Because of this He is known as Subrahmaṇya Skanda, as defender of all Sādhus. Once, Sanatkumāra broke down the Krauñća-Parvata (a mountain), earning the name Krauñćabhettā. At another time, Sanatkumāra in the Heaven exposed Brahmā (Creator) ignorance of the Vedas (Holy Scriptures) and hence got the name Brahma-Śāstā. His other name is Guha, the secret one, because Sanatkumāra is the keeper and protector of all Divine Secrets, Hermetics and Esoterics! His name Svāmi-Nātha point that He is the perceptor, Guru/h of his own father and the suzerain of all Svāmîs -Enlighten Spiritual Gurus!

It seams, that Sanatkumāra assumed six faces to suckle milk if th six mothers and so got the appelation Ṣaḍhāna or Ṣaṇmukha [Ṣ is English 'Sh'] but six Pleiades show the six principles of supersensual knowledge! Only someone who reaches higher knowledge, Pleiadian Wisdom of God is enough worth to be the Shamballa Warrior of the White Brotherhood. Magical number six is very important because means victory over Svādhiṣṭhāna, the second Ćakra (Chakra) and over Manas Ćakra in Ājñā structure, which both have six petals in their Manḍala. Accorrding to Yoga and Tantra psychology, there are six centres of psycho-spiritual energy of counsciousness in the human body and they are: Mūlādhāra at the anus, Svādhiṣṭhāna at the root of sex organ, Maṇipūra at the navel or above, Anāhata at the region of heart, Viśuddha at the throat, and Ājñā between the eyebrows in the head. When the Sādhaka, Yoga Aspirant succesfully raises his psychic energy through these centres, s/he has a vision of the Śiva-Śakti, the God and Goddess!

Of course, because Pārvatî Devî, real Sanatkumāras Mother is a daughter of Master Himavān and Menakā, Kārttikeya is the Holy Grandson of them both being as a part of th oldest Yoga and Tantra line of perceptors! The God's Son Sanatkumāra Skanda is real angel or deity of deeper and higher esoterical and hermetic traditions of the East and West and He is the embodiment of all mysticism and mystical science! Sahasrāra above the top of the headwhich is the destination for this six faced and six centred energy from the body Ćakras (Chakras) represents this perfect state of spiritual consiousness well-known as the Son of God, Subrahmaṇya, Sanatkumāra! In a perfect being the flow is so refined and uniform, that practically all the centres have been elevated to this highest level, but Ćakras are simply class on the way toward this noble state. Ćakras (Chakras) suymbolize different stages of consciousness, power an energy in transformation process.

The noble Subrahmaṇya Kumāra has at all two consorts, Vaḷḷi-Amma, an elder one, and Devasenā, younger one. The former is daughter of a humble chieftain of a race given to agriculture and woodcraft. The latter is the daughter of Indra, the King od angels, gods and heavenly beings. This is just to show, that Got does not make any distinction between the humble folk and elite. The Highest Lord God loves all equally and accept both, the folk and the elite. These two consorts show that Sanatkumāra unites two different spiritual traditions but accepts their difference in similar way as loves His both wifes. Folk religious cult and elitist hermetic tradition are His true, symbolical wifes or consorts. Sanatkumāra likes and supports equally folk cults of Goddess in the same way as very spiritual, heavenly esoteric or occult science! Skanda is a kind of double tradition spiritual master or perceptor!

Sanatkumāra with His twelve hands, symbolically represents cosmic power of Avatāra , Heavenly Incarnation and all zodiac signs, all Rasi from Capricornus, Aquarius to Saggitarius! Man has only two hands, but his superior intellect has enabled him to invent so many tools and instruments through which he can accomplish manual tasks, even simultaneously. The combination of the six heads and twelve hands teaches us, that the ideal of humanity is the perfected being who is not only a great Yogi, but also a great worker. Two consorts also mean, that the true lider of a society will espouse agriculture and industry on the one hand, and the armed forces on the other in order to develop the society as also to protect it! The lance of dazzling brightness is the weaponwith which this Devasenāpati vanquished many enemies. It actually stands for knowledge and wisdom with which all the ugly demons of ignorance can be destroyed.

Sanatkumāra as the noble perceptor of Guru/ḥ shows that is surrounded with two kinds of souls as His disciples, the first like Vaḷḷi-Amma, means protectors of the Nature, and the second like Devasenā, means protectors agains any kind of evil asuras! As His Śaktis, they represent two different aspects of Divine Power. Heavenly consorts show two circles of disciple and their special works as Sanatkumāra, as Śiva-Śakti Divine Son is Heavenly Leader. Because His temples are usually found on hill-tops and the peacock is His carrier, Vasana, mount it may be indicated that He was a sylvan deity connected with serpent-worship and tree worship, and hence was more popular among the people of lower strata in the prearyan society. Today, however, all sections of Hinduism have accepted Sanatkumāra and they venerate Him, but much more as Subrahmaṇya Skanda or Kārttikeya, pointed toward Pleiadan spirituality and Pleiadan mystical sources!

Sanatkumāra as Guhya-Guru/ḥ, secret guide and as Svāmi-Nātha fathers or spiritual fathers keeper or suzerein, is well-known to all spiritual seekers of advanced in their practical research! In icons it is shown, as belabouring a snake with one of its legs and it stands for what is oposed to it. By riding the peacock He is showing that He is really beyond what is within time and outside it. Sanatkumāra, Kārttikeya, the Shambala Lord is beyond all dualities and because it may stand against Asuras! If the snake represents lust, as it often does in symbology of psychology, the peacock signifies the powers of chastity and hence is shown as riding on the peacock! Lastly, the peacock with its beautiful plumage, represents creation in all its glory. Hence He that rides the peacock it is the Supreme Lord, the master of all creation!

Kārttikeya is this great Son of the Lord God, which is begotten to save the world from the tyranny of the fiend Tārakāsura, who seems be embodied as scientifical ateism against spirituality and esoterism. Such devil is necessary to win on all six levels of existence, on outer and on inner dimensions of creation. Devasenāpati vanquishes and destroys all enemies of spirituality and enemies of the divine way! There are three outer dimensions like dense, astral and mental world and there are three inner dimensions like higher or causal mentality, reason or buddhi and ātmanic or soul level of consciousness which all are attacked through devil beings like asuras, rākṣasas (rākshasas) and piśaćas. Six is the number of counsciousness levels where any evil may attack or work through and such levels need realison and exorcism! So all evil forces of asuras (demons) may govern only in six lvels but the seventh one is only for gods, angels and halfangelic beings, devas and upadevas. People have to look for Gurus like Kārttikeya!

Those meditating on hill-tops or in the mountains are close to Sanatkumāra who prefers Himalaya mountains as His spiritual place of work according our knowledge about Ṣamballa (Shambala). Skandapurāṇa, Holy Scripture about the Lord Skanda teaches us more about the one Brahman, without a second, the All, Heavenly Father from whom Kārttikeya, Sanatkumāra was born or rather created! Śiva-Śakti is All-Brahman, the embodiment of renunciation and destruction of all evil and similarly with His Son! Kārttikeya is the Lord of all Gaṇas who are spiritual warriors and spiritual martial arts practicers, and He is supporter of traditional Kālaṛpayat (Kālarippayatu), divine martial art very well known in all India, Tibet or Himalaya region. Warriors āsanas like Ćandra Namaskaram are practiced in Sanatkumāras consciousness and all going to Ṣamballa (Shambala) know it very well. Skanda supports those living in a group (Gaṇa) near a forest or a mountain and particularly those Gaṇas (groups) which bear with the evil, fighting against asuras, demons and other devils.

Sanatkumāra very well known in the Western Esotericism vanquished demons, asuras and succesfully brought demoniac followers under His holy subjugation. Gaṇa is a group but much more a clan living together or very close in hermitage, hence Gaṇas, God's attendants are strong clanic type spiritual groups, Āśamitees. Pati is the head of Gaṇa (clanic spiritual group). As the group of yogis and yoginis became more refined and cultured Heavenly Pati like Kārttikeya might have been transformed into the higher form with much more powers and charismatic forces! Real, spiritual growth is only in spiritual, divine, esoteric groups with strong connection of deep brotherhood friendship, in groups with Guru/ḥ, groups like clans! All have to be Gaṇikas, Gaṇa attendants, regula attendants if they wish spiritual development and advanced in esotericism or spirituality, and they have to win against devil forces.

Kanda Sasti, a Time to Contemplate

Kanda Sasti, a Time to Contemplate
by V.S. Krishnan

There are temples for Murugan at many places in India and abroad, but the temple located at the sea-shore at Tiruchendur is unique. It was here at Tiruchendur, the Jagadguru Adi Sankara came and composed his immortal song, ‘Subrahmanya Bhujangam’:

“He, who is seated on the peacock, who symbolise the essence of mahā vākyas, who resides in the heart of saints, who represent the Vedas, who appears marvellous, who is the son of Mahadeva, I worship Thee.” (Mayoorādhi Ruddham)

Muruga comes

Nakkeerar says that Muruga comes to Tiruchendur "borne aloft on elephant, swiftly striding, irresistible as death, fleet as the risen wind" It was here that Saint Nakkeerar, the auhor of Tiru Murugātru Padai, said:
"All the ordeals that I face would melt away the moment I mention the sacred name of Vēlavan who resides at Senthil. The evil effects arising out of my karma would disappear the moment I utter the name of the Lord of Tiruchendur.”

Arunagirinathar conveys the same idea in Kandar Alankaram:

"So long as you are beside me, so long as your six sacred faces and the twelve helping hands are there and so long the grace of your lotus feet adorned by thandai, your broad shoulders adorned by kadampa garland are there before me, how can the planetary movements Arunagirinathar meets Muruganaffect me?” (Nal en seyum, vinai thaan en seyum).

Perhaps, in keeping with the spirit of this hymn, the shrine of planetary gods (navagraha sannadhi) that form part of any temple is not found here.

It was here at Tiruchendur that Arunagirinathar experienced the presence of Murugan which he expressed in his song Thandayani Vendayum. Arunagirinathar has composed total of 84 songs on the Lord of Tiruchendur. The song which starts with the words iyalisai says, "Oh Lord of Tiruchendur, I seek your blessings to have a mind free from attachments or diversions so that I can keep chanting your powerful shadākshara mantra always.”

A familiar local tradition runs to the effect that about 1648 AD, a race of seafaring men, identified later as Dutch, descended upon Tiruchendur and carried away the idol Shanmukhar and Śiva Natarajar, thinking that they were made of gold. Their attempt at melting it proving futile, they tried to carry them away by sea. But the sea suddenly grew boisterous, and rocked the ship violently, so the sailors threw the idols into the sea.

Five years later in 1653 AD, Vadamalayappa Pillayaan, administrator of Tirunelveli District, had a dream in which Murugan appeared and gave directions to locate the idol. Acting to the advice conveyed to him by the God, he put out to sea and following the instructions that the idol was to be found at the spot whereon a lime fruit would be found floating, and the place marked by the circling overhead of a kite, the bird of Vishnu. Vadamalaiappa Pillaiyyan recovered the original idol and reinstalled it in the temple.

Above all, Tiruchendur acquires importance because it was here Lord Murugan fulfilled the aim for which he manifested on earth. It was here Murugan used the powerful weapon of Vēl given by mother Parvati to conquer Soorasamharam, who took the form of a sinister mango tree to mislead Murugan. When Murugan hurled his Vēl, it pierced the tree and split it into two parts.

Murugan’s Vēl did not target Soorapadman as a human being, because there is divinity in every individual. Rather, Murugan’s Vēl targeted the ego embodied in Soorapadman. The soul of Sooran which attained its natural state of divinity then expressed its reverence apologised for being ego-centric and requested Murugan to accept him as His servant. Murugan then accepted him, converted one half of the split tree as his mount the peacock and the other half as his ensign the rooster.

Soorapadman was only a symbol; the real danger was the ego which he represented. The war Murugan waged at Tiruchendur was not a war against any individual. It was the war waged by Murugan, the symbol of love, against Soorapadman, the symbol of hatred. It was a war against the real enemy, hiding within, in the form of ignorance, anger and ego.

Though Murugan destroyed the enemy within Soorapadman, this enemy continues to manifest in different forms. Therefore, the war witnessed at Tiruchendur was only a beginning. We need to wage many more battles to drive out the enemies within and realize the presence of Murugan in our heart.

The more powerful the enemy, the greater the varieties of weapons we use. When the inner enemy is very powerful we need very powerful weapons also. What a better weapon we can have than the Vēl wielded by Murugan. Let us worship the Vēl and pray for being blessed with confidence, rectitude and vision.

Even a world war may last for few years but the inner war waged against ignorance, desires and ego should go on. So long we have the blessings of Murugan this war will end soon and we will attain the high state of happiness and peace.

Tiruchendur Kanda Sashti

Even before the advent of Kanda Sasti, Tiruchendur starts wearing a festive look. The devotees start arriving to experience the grace of Murugan. In 2016, the Kanda Sasti celebrations start on 31st October and culminate on 7th November.

During this period the forms of worship include anointment (abhishekam), special decoration (alankāram), offering of light (deepa arādana) and processions in a golden chariot followed by pundits reciting Vēl Vakuppu, Veera Val Vakuppu, etc. On the sixth day, Soorasamharam is enacted on the seashore watched by lakhs of devotees and on seventh day the celestial wedding of Murugan is conducted in splendour and glory.

The war with Soorapadman is symbolically over but the war against the evil forces like ego, pride, anger and intolerance which Soorapadman represented continues. Kanda Sasti is an occasion when the devotee should find out whether a miniature Soorapadman is present within. It is an occasion when he should seek the grace of Senthil Vēlavan and attain victory over the enemy within.

SriLanka's Veddas celebrate Kataragama wedding festival.

Veddas celebrate Kataragama wedding festival.
by Patrick Harrigan

Quietly and with little fanfare, some of Sri Lanka's most ancient traditions are showing signs of fresh vitality after many long years in decline. Even as Sri Lankan Buddhists celebrate the introduction of Buddhism 2300 years ago, so likewise the island's indigenous people have something to celebrate during 1993, the International Year for the World's Indigenous People. And much of it has to do with archaic yet living traditions connected with the great wedding celebration of the Wanniyal-aetto maiden Valli to the living spirit of Kataragama.

No one knows for certain how long island Lanka has been home to its clans of Wanniyal-aetto, the indigenous people of the Yaksa Gotra. According to some accounts, they descended here from another loka or realm of existence. Quite possibly they walked to Lanka from the Asian mainland during one of the ice ages when sea levels were low enough to expose Adam's Bridge as recently as seven thousand years ago.

Sri Lanka's first people, the Veddas or Wannniyal-aetto ('forest-dwellers') as they call themselves, have lived in Lanka for so many thousands of years that they no longer recall how they arrived. Like other indigenous people of the Yaksa Gotra, they claim to be direct matrilineal descendants of their great mother-ancestor, Queen Kuveni of ancient days and even further back to remote prehistoric times when the Nae Yaku or great ancestral spirits walked upon the earth. They were the original wanni nayakas or Lords of Lanka's vast jungle interior.

Kande Yaka

The cultural heritage of the Wanniyal-aetto preserves ample evidence of some great events which occurred here in remote prehistoric times. These traditions are not mere memories but living schools of wisdom that explore many subtle dimensions bursting with limitless spiritual energy accessible to those seers and knowers who are hunters of wisdom.

Among the nae yaku or spiritual ancestors of the Wanniyal-aetto, the greatest is said to be Kande Yaka, the terrific Spirit of the Mountain who is respected by Sinhala and Tamil communities alike as Kanda Kumara or Murukan, the ever-playful Eternal Youth of Kataragama. In South Asian lore, he is also the divine general Skanda or Karttikeya, whom many have compared with the historical al-Sikandar or Alexander the Great, the youthful lance-bearing student of Aristotle whose compact army conquered half of the ancient world in the 4th century BC.

Kataragama Valli Amma

According to indigenous accounts, the great yaksha or spirit of Kataragama is an alien divinity or presence that came to Lanka long ago from some place far away. One tradition, for instance, declares that he descended from the sky and landed upon Adam's Peak, stood there for a long time, and then followed the path of the great gajas or elephants to Gajaragama (Kataragama), 'the home of the elephants' There on the bank of the Menik Ganga, he planted his spear in the earth, sat down, and has remained ever since. Kataragama therefore claims to be the first puranagama or indigenous settlement.

Other traditions speak of him arriving by vessel, possibly from India. All say that he imparted great knowledge before proceeding onward by foot to Kataragama. Early in this century, Veddas of the East Coast informed H. Parker (quoted in Ancient Ceylon) that:

"When he came, he told us the names of things, trees, and animals, and how we should make offerings and dance to him when going into the jungle, and at other times. He told us everything we know."

To this day, the institution of pada yatra or foot pilgrimage is closely associated to Kataragama and its ancient mystery tradition. Starting with the great Kanda Yaka himself, countless generations of adivasis and other pilgrims have followed in the great god's very footsteps.

Valli Amma

In the legend of Kataragama, the terrific Spirit embodies itself forth in human guise as a handsome young stranger who seems to be hunting deer with bow and arrow. In fact, however, he comes expressly in search of Valli, the human daughter of an enchanted red deer who is, therefore, also a magical deer of sorts herself. The Wanniyal-aetto tribal chieftain Nambi Raja, who found the infant girl in the forest and raised her as his own daughter, instructs his darling daughter-princess to guard a chena-field of ripening millet at nearby Sella ('little') Kataragama. Armed only with her sweet voice and a stone sling, her duty is to chase away marauding birds and wild animals.

Valli grows up in the company of other maidens like herself, but she differs in that she has taken a vow in private to marry no one but the great God of the Mountains himself. She sings at the birds and animals to keep them away from the crop of millet, but this also attracts the attention of Kanda Yaka who is lurking, listening and watching from nearby.
Murugan approaches Valli disguised as a hunter

Pretending to be tracking a deer, Kanda Yaka approaches boldly, but his striking appearance only alarms Valli, who bids the stranger to be gone at once. Meekly, he apologizes for intruding and explains that he is following a she-deer (who is none other than Valli herself). Still, she doesn't recognize the love of her life in the strange hunter, but bids him to depart and abuses him for straying into her chena-field.

Old rogue Murugan

The core of the pre-historic mystery-romance of Kataragama is the story of how the cunning hunter god appears as a stranger and lives unrecognized among the Wanniyal-aetto even while clandestinely wooing the chieftain's beautiful daughter Valli. Gradually and stealthily, the great god reveals himself to Valli, who is amazed at his transformations. In a timeless love story deep in mystical content, the 'impossible' courtship between a young maiden and the age-old deity actually comes true.

Exchange of Vows

The holy couple, now madly in love, were meeting daily while Valli's male relatives were away hunting and gathering wild honey. But finally harvest time came and Valli was called to rejoin her kinfolk.

When her divine lover appeared that evening and did not find his beloved Valli, he was extremely distraught. Weeping and calling her name, he felt exactly what it is like to be a human being deprived of one's beloved companion in life. The pathos of this scene has provided rich material for local song and poetry ever since that day in remote pre-history.

Eloped

The hunter-god did recover his composure, however, and headed straight for the Vedda chieftain's camp in Kataragama. Under cloak of darkness, the divine stranger slipped into the jungle camp, woke the girl, and "stole" her away. At once they fled and eloped into Deviyange Kaele, the 'God's Own forest'.

Before too long, the chief and his men woke up to realize that the friendly stranger was really a terrible rogue. Raising a hue and a cry, they seized their weapons and gave chase. Some versions say that the armed and angry tribesmen caught up to the mysterious couple at Suran Kotte (present-day Kirivehera) and a battle ensued.

The pursuers first released a barrage of a angry oaths and abusive epithets, followed by a volley of arrows. But tradition recalls that all their barrages turned back upon them and left them dead or senseless by some enchantment cast upon them by the fierce Spirit of the Mountain seeing Valli's distress at the sight, however, Kande Yaka bid her to restore her kinsmen to life, which she did by mere touch.

Holy Wedding

When they came to their senses, the Veddas understood that this "rogue" was none other than the terrific Kande Yaka himself. They fell down again in terror and worshipped him out of dread of his awesome power and could not stand up in his Divine Presence. Gradually their fear gave way to adoration and admiration for his grace and uncanny ability to transform every obstacle laid before him.

Needless to say, the mysterious stranger's marriage to the chieftain's daughter was instantly approved. Red-hot anger turned into ecstatic joy, and the triumphant procession or perahera returned all in one unforgettable night that would be remembered and re-enacted for thousands of years to come.

That same day, fleet-footed messengers spread the incredible news far and wide. Every Wanniyal-aetto man, woman, and child in all of Deviyange Kaele came at once on foot to Kataragama in what must surely be the origin of the Pada Yatra or foot pilgrimage to attend the divine couple's holy wedding festival. The great wedding, like all indigenous weddings, was and still is a simple exchange of vows with gifts followed by a riotous feast with singing and dancing and very manner of celebration suitable to the joyous occasion. This is the origin of the Esala festival.

Valli's own Story

This theme of the exchange of vows between the human soul and the god repeats itself daily in Kataragama or wherever human hearts yearn for intimate contact with higher orders of reality. The vow, oath, or promise, as Valli and so many other have since learned, works powerful magic and can accomplish great marvels indeed. The kap hitaweema or tree-planting ritual of unspoken promise to re-enact Valli's courtship and marriage is one fine example. The god, it seems, loves those who are faithful to him.

The structure of the story of Valli's dramatic romance and marriage to the Kataragama god suggests that Valli herself is the original narrator who has told and re-told her marvelous story from many different perspectives, inspired no doubt by the super-abundance of divine grace bestowed upon her by the loving Spirit of the Mountain. The Spirit, in a sense, spoke to Valli and through her to countless human generations right up to the present day.

In the indigenous traditions of the Valli Amma Parampara, Lady Valli is held in respect and reverence no less than her lord. For although she was a mere adolescent girl at the time, she captivated and tamed the terrible spirit of the Mountain and actually transformed him into a beloved kinsman. Ever since then, Kande Yaka or Kataragama Deviyo has been considered to be the great champion of the Veddas and all who honor the divine mystery tradition transmitted handed down from Valli Amma herself.
